FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / AUGUST 11, 2008
Fringe announces preliminary figures
40,814 tickets issued for 11-day festival, top attended shows announced
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Fringe announced preliminary attendance figures for its 2008 festival. In all, 40,814 tickets were issued during the 11-day performing arts festival, an 8 percent increase over last year. Revenue increased over $36,000.
- Tickets issued: 40,814
Buttons issued: 15,178 (Notes: Admission buttons are used to count the number of unique audience members attending the festival. Of the 15,178 issued this year, 14,262 were sold and 916 were issued gratis to volunteers and artists.)
Revenue: $300,405
Performances: 806
Shows: 156
Participating artists: 1,080
Volunteers: 393
Audience-submitted reviews on the Web site (as of 10 a.m. Monday): 2,153
“We are absolutely delighted with the numbers,” said Robin C. Gillette, Fringe’s executive director. “The figures show that Fringe is solid both as an event and as an organization, and the buzz in the Fringe community was positively kinetic.”
The total number of performances was down from last year (806 versus 874 in 2007) due to fewer Bring Your Own Venue performances. The attendance and revenue figures erase the dip the numbers took in 2007. Last year’s festival opened the day after the I-35W bridge collapse.

Congrats to all the Fringe Encore folks. Each venue’s top-selling show is awarded a sixth performance in the last slot in the festival—8:30 for most venues, 8 o’clock for Bryant-Lake Bowl. Here they are:
Note: Sara Scrimshaw’s “Dance of the Whisky Faerie” was the top-selling show at the Southern; she opted out of the Encore program.

Take note: Live Action Set, presenting "Deviants," has cancelled tonight's 7 p.m. performance due to injury. So far the remaining shows will run as scheduled.

From what we saw Monday, things are hopping! Of course, that fits with the 10 percent ticket increase we saw on opening weekend. And the now nearly 1,100+ audience reviews. Yay!
This year, the venues are grouped close together, many within walking distance. Heck, the Rarig has four theaters in the same building! So, consider the idea of walking, biking, or taking Mass Transit to the Fringe. Some tools to help:
Get walking directions on Google Maps: For example, Rarig to the Southern is just ten little minutes.
MetroTransit's NexTrip gives you up to the minute info on where the next bus is, in addition to a search function that will help you plan your route.
Biking! The Fringe program has suggested bike routes. MetroTransit buses and trains have bike racks that allow you to get to more distant venues and bring your bike along.
So very Fringe green!
Your pals,
Bill and Matt
A special request: On Saturday, an artists at Rarig misplaced a MiniDV videotape of her performance. The tape is small, in a clear plastic case and clearly labeled "Fringe 08." If you happen upon it, just drop it off to at a box office. Thanks!

"Three Muses (Fringe)"
Bid on the prints at eBay.
Local artist, Visible Fringe alumnus and friend of us all John Largaespada has graciously donated four digital prints to Fringe. John specializes in photoillustrations that are a little strange, a little haunting and entirely fascinating. And he's interpreted the now-famous Fringe kitty:

Their names are (from the left in the larger print): Pumpkin Seed, Bobo and Boo.
Drawing winners!
Day 5 winners: Alex Franzen, Melissa Markes and Karen Goneau. (Even if you win a pound of coffee in the daily drawing, you're still eligible for the other prizes on Sunday. Yay!)
Stop by Fringe Central to put your name in the hat (or the, uh, box) to win coffee, an Equal Exchange gift basket or the Ultra Prize: Two '09 Ultra Passes and two season tickets to the Guthrie! (Drawing's on Sun., Aug. 10. Stop by Fringe Central to sign up and check out the rules.)

P.S. Here's your Easter Egg for the day. Just in case you need a Fringe date.
P.P.S. Here's another one you've probably seen. We've had it stuck in our heads for a few days. Need to get it out.

14,215 tickets issued! That’s a 10 percent increase over last year—thus erasing last year’s dip in attendance. W00t. If you want to read the press release, it’s right here (PDF). And it is a stunning, stunning piece of literature.

Do you know what I love best? Apart from moules frites in Lier, Belgium, on a pleasant September evening? No?
Coming home (buzzed—let’s be honest) from the opening weekend party to find 110 reviews waiting in the approval queue on the Fringe Web site.
That’s what I love. A lot.
You guys are awesome.

And at such a cute URL: http://www.twincities.com/fringe
Love it, Web people in St. Paul. LOVE IT.
And they have four categories this year: “Must See,” “Worth Considering,” “Could be Worse” and “Avoid like the Plague.”
A humble suggestion: Replace “Avoid like a Mild Head Cold, the Kind Where You’re Not Sick Enough to Stay Home but Feeling Just Cruddy Enough to Space Out in front of CuteOverload.com All Day at Your Desk” next year. Because that makes sense to Minnesotans. The plague, we don’t have so much.
